    Text SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Alfred “Al” C. Cooper, 83, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Carolyn Usher Cooper, died peacefully with his family at his side Thursday evening, June 28, 2012, at Candler Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
    Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a son of the late Alfred Charles Cooper and the late Ruth Diamond Cooper.  Mr. Cooper was a United States Navy veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served as Chairman of the Vergers at Christ Episcopal Church for 15 years.  Mr. Cooper grew up in the Bay area of California and was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He moved to Savannah in December 1979 where he became Executive Director of the Private Industry Council. Mr. Cooper retired in 1986 when he joined his wife in the Cooper Research Firm. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Phyllis Carolyn Russell Bennett.
    Al’s greatest joys were time with this family, especially trips to the library and the park with his great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and Marley.
    Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Carolyn Usher Cooper of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Diana C. Cooper of Edina, Minnesota, and her children, Christopher and Hayley, and Alison C. Fairchild and her husband, Bruce, of Sparta, New Jersey, and their children, Jillian and Michael; one son, Peter Cooper of Oregon; one step-daughter, Vivian Whittal of Savannah, Georgia; two grandchildren, Carolyn Brannen Bennett of Richmond Hill, Georgia, and her children, Brooklynn and Marley, and David Alexander Kaplan of Savannah, Georgia; one sister, Joy Zeidler and her husband, Larry, of Clayton, California; one niece and two nephews.
    The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.
